Research shows that ecosystem health and human well-being are often mutually reinforcing, whether in the direction of wellness and sustainability or poverty and degradation. However, while well-being is increasingly recognized as an important consideration when managing ecosystems, human needs and activities are often still thought of only in terms of their negative impacts on ecosystems. In this essay, we explore the proposition that there can be a mutually constitutive relationship between people’s well-being and the health of ecosystems, and discuss what such a relationship would mean for expanding the use of human well-being indicators in ecosystem-based management. Specifically, we discuss two areas of theory: ecosocial theory from social epidemiology and the marginalization–degradation thesis in political ecology; collectively, these provide a justification, in certain circumstances at least, for thinking of well-being as not just an add-on in natural resource management but as an indicator of ecosystem health and a prerequisite of social-ecological sustainability. We conclude with a discussion of future research needs to further explore how human well-being and ecosystem health interact. } } @article {, author = {Acheson JM}, title = {Private land and common oceans: analysis of the development of property regimes}, journal = {Current Anthropology}, volume = {56}, pages = {28}, year = {2015} } @article {, author = {Adger WN}, title = {Social and ecological resilience: are they related?}, journal = {Progress in Human Geography}, volume = {24}, pages = {347}, year = {2000} } @article {, author = {Agyeman J}, title = {Toward a “just” sustainability?}, journal = {Continuum}, volume = {22}, pages = {751}, year = {2008} } @article {, author = {Agyeman J}, author = {Bullard RD}, author = {Evans B}, title = {Exploring the nexus: bringing together sustainability, environmental justice and equity}, journal = {Space and Polity}, volume = {6}, pages = {77}, year = {2002} } @article {, author = {Alessa L}, author = {Kliskey A}, author = {Gamble J}, author = {Fidel M}, author = {Beaujean G}, author = {Gosz J}, title = {The role of Indigenous science and local knowledge in integrated observing systems: moving toward adaptive capacity indices and early warning systems}, journal = {Sustainability Science}, volume = {11}, pages = {91}, year = {2015} } @article {, author = {Amberson S}, author = {Biedenweg K}, author = {James J}, author = {Christie P}, title = {“The heartbeat of our people”: identifying and measuring how salmon influences Quinault tribal well-being}, journal = {Society and Natural Resources}, volume = {29}, pages = {1389}, year = {2016} } @article {, author = {Ang F}, author = {Passel SV}, title = {Beyond the environmentalist’s paradox and the debate on weak versus strong sustainability}, journal = {BioScience}, volume = {62}, pages = {251}, year = {2012} } @article {, author = {Anthony R}, title = {Animistic pragmatism and native ways of knowing: adaptive strategies for overcoming the struggle for food in the sub-Arctic}, journal = {International Journal of Circumpolar Health}, volume = {72}, pages = {811}, year = {2013} } @article {, author = {Armitage D}, author = {Béné C}, author = {Charles AT}, author = {Johnson D}, author = {Allison EH}, title = {The interplay of well-being and resilience in applying a social-ecological perspective}, journal = {Ecology and Society}, volume = {17}, pages = {15}, year = {2012} } @article {, author = {Augustine S}, author = {Dearden P}, title = {Changing paradigms in marine and coastal conservation: a case study of clam gardens in the Southern Gulf Islands, Canada}, journal = {The Canadian Geographer/Le Géographe canadien}, volume = {58}, pages = {305}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Berkes F}, title = {Devolution of environment and resources governance: trends and future}, journal = {Environmental Conservation}, volume = {37}, pages = {489}, year = {2010} } @article {, author = {Biedenweg K}, author = {Stiles K}, author = {Wellman K}, title = {A holistic framework for identifying human wellbeing indicators for marine policy}, journal = {Marine Policy}, volume = {64}, pages = {31}, year = {2016} } @article {, author = {Brashares JS}, author = {Arcese P}, author = {Sam MK}, author = {Coppolillo PB}, author = {Sinclair ARE}, author = {Balmford A}, title = {Bushmeat hunting, wildlife declines, and fish supply in West Africa}, journal = {Science}, volume = {306}, pages = {1180}, year = {2004} } @article {, author = {Britton E}, author = {Coulthard S}, title = {Assessing the social wellbeing of Northern Ireland’s fishing society using a three-dimensional approach}, journal = {Marine Policy}, volume = {37}, pages = {28}, year = {2013} } @article {, author = {Brulle RJ}, author = {Pellow DN}, title = {Environmental justice: human health and environmental inequalities}, journal = {Annual Review of Public Health}, volume = {27}, pages = {103}, year = {2006} } @article {, author = {Cao S}, author = {Zhong B}, author = {Yue H}, author = {Zeng H}, author = {Zeng J}, title = {Development and testing of a sustainable environmental restoration policy on eradicating the poverty trap in China’s Changting County}, journal = {Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences}, volume = {106}, pages = {10712}, year = {2009} } @article {, author = {Chapin FS}, author = {Pickett SA}, author = {Power M}, author = {Jackson R}, author = {Carter D}, author = {Duke C}, title = {Earth stewardship: a strategy for social–ecological transformation to reverse planetary degradation}, journal = {Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences}, volume = {1}, pages = {44}, year = {2011} } @article {, author = {Chappell MJ}, author = {LaValle LA}, title = {Food security and biodiversity: can we have both?
