Terrestrial researchers can purchase inexpensive off-the-shelf cameras, but aquatic researchers face challenges in adopting similar systems for underwater science. Although technology allows researchers to deploy cameras in any aquatic environment, high procurement costs are often a barrier, particularly for studies that require the collection of lengthy videos. In this note, we provide a detailed guide explaining how to assemble an underwater camera system for less than \$425 USD. We focus especially on the construction of the underwater housing, which is typically the most expensive component of an underwater camera system. As described, this system can record 13 h full high-definition videos in depths up to 100 m. It can be constructed and assembled with limited technical background using tools available in most workshops. The guide includes a general overview of the system, a full list of components, detailed instructions on constructing the camera housing, and suggestions on how to mount and use the camera in fieldwork. Our goal for this note is to promote the wider use of remote underwater cameras in aquatic research by making them accessible to those with limited financial means. } } @article {, author = {Bacheler NM}, author = {Schobernd ZH}, author = {Berrane DJ}, author = {Schobernd CM}, author = {Mitchell WA}, author = {Geraldi NR}, title = {When a trap is not a trap: converging entry and exit rates and their effect on trap saturation of black sea bass (Centropristis striata)}, journal = {ICES Journal of Marine Science}, volume = {70}, pages = {873}, year = {2013} } @article {, author = {Binder TR}, author = {Thompson HT}, author = {Muir AM}, author = {Riley SC}, author = {Marsden JE}, author = {Bronte CR}, title = {New insight into the spawning behavior of lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, from a recovering population in the Laurentian Great Lakes}, journal = {Environmental Biology of Fishes}, volume = {98}, pages = {173}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Cairns NA}, author = {Stoot LJ}, author = {Blouin-Demers G}, author = {Cooke SJ}, title = {Refinement of bycatch reduction devices to exclude freshwater turtles from commercial fishing nets}, journal = {Endangered Species Research}, volume = {22}, pages = {251}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Domenici P}, author = {Wilson ADM}, author = {Kurvers RHJM}, author = {Marras S}, author = {Herbert-Read JE}, author = {Steffensen JF}, title = {How sailfish use their bills to capture schooling prey}, journal = {Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B: Biological Sciences}, volume = {281}, pages = {20140444}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Favaro B}, author = {Duff SD}, author = {Côté IM}, title = {A trap with a twist: evaluating a bycatch reduction device to prevent rockfish capture in crustacean traps}, journal = {ICES Journal of Marine Science}, volume = {70}, pages = {114}, year = {2013} } @article {, author = {Favaro B}, author = {Duff SD}, author = {Côté IM}, title = {Density-dependent catchability of spot prawns (Pandalus platyceros) observed using underwater video}, journal = {Journal of Ocean Technology}, volume = {9}, pages = {83}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Favaro B}, author = {Lichota C}, author = {Côté IM}, author = {Duff SD}, title = {TrapCam: an inexpensive camera system for studying deep-water animals}, journal = {Methods in Ecology Evolution}, volume = {3}, pages = {39}, year = {2012} } @article {, author = {Goldsmith TH}, author = {Fernandez HR}, title = {Comparative studies of crustacean spectral sensitivity}, journal = {Zeitschrift für vergleichende Physiologie}, volume = {60}, pages = {156}, year = {1968} } @article {, author = {Hammar L}, author = {Andersson S}, author = {Eggertsen L}, author = {Haglund J}, author = {Gullström M}, author = {Ehnberg J}, title = {Hydrokinetic turbine effects on fish swimming behaviour}, journal = {PLoS ONE}, volume = {8}, pages = {1}, year = {2013} } @article {, author = {Harasti D}, author = {Gallen C}, author = {Malcolm H}, author = {Tegart P}, author = {Hughes B}, title = {Where are the little ones: Distribution and abundance of the threatened serranid Epinephelus daemelii (Günther, 1876) in intertidal habitats in New South Wales, Australia}, journal = {Journal of Applied Ichthyology}, volume = {30}, pages = {1007}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Jury SH}, author = {Howell H}, author = {O’Grady DF}, author = {Watson WH}, title = {Lobster trap video: in situ video surveillance of the behaviour of Homarus americanus in and around traps}, journal = {Marine \& Freshwater Research}, volume = {52}, pages = {1125}, year = {2001} } @article {, author = {Morato T}, author = {Watson R}, author = {Pitcher TJ}, author = {Pauly D}, title = {Fishing down the deep}, journal = {Fish and Fisheries}, volume = {7}, pages = {24}, year = {2006} } @article {, author = {Nguyen TX}, author = {Winger PD}, author = {Legge G}, author = {Dawe EG}, author = {Mullowney DR}, title = {Underwater observations of the behaviour of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) encountering a shrimp trawl off northeast Newfoundland}, journal = {Fisheries Research}, volume = {156}, pages = {9}, year = {2014} } @article {, author = {Renchen GF}, author = {Pittman SJ}, author = {Brandt ME}, title = {Investigating the behavioural responses of trapped fishes using underwater video surveillance}, journal = {Journal of Fish Biology}, volume = {81}, pages = {1161}, year = {2012} } @article {, author = {Robbins WD}, author = {Peddemors VM}, author = {Broadhurst MK}, author = {Gray CA}, title = {Hooked on fishing?
