FACETS is currently funded by an article processing charge that is payable by the author, the author’s funding body, or their institution once the manuscript has been accepted for publication. There are no submission fees.

Article Processing Charge

The APC is charged in Canadian dollars (CAD, plus tax) to authors in Canada, and in American dollars (USD) to authors outside of Canada. Standard APC amounts by article type are as follows:

  • Invited Reply: no charge
  • Comment, Editorial, Retrospective: $525 originally submitted after January 1, 2024
  • Every other article type: $2000 originally submitted after January 1, 2024

Discounts & Waivers

Authors may apply for a discount within ScholarOne — the journal’s online submission and peer review system — only after acceptance. Several discounts and waivers are available:

  • If any author is a member of the Royal Society of Canada,
    • for Editorials, Perspectives, Reviews, invited Replies and Retrospectives: the APC is waived
    • for Comments: the APC is $350 CAD
    • for every other article type: the APC is $1225 CAD
  • If the corresponding author is from the University of California, but not UC San Francisco, the UC Libraries will automatically pay the first $1000 of the open access publishing fee, and may pay the remainder, depending on need. See details on the UC Open Access Agreement below.
  • If the corresponding author’s institution subscribes to CSP journals through the Canadian Federal Science Libraries Network  (FSLN) authors receive a 15% discount on OA fees for CSP’s fully gold open access journals.
  • If the corresponding author is from a Research4Life group A country, the APC is waived.
  • If the corresponding author is from a Research4Life group B country, the APC is $250 USD.
  • Collections with reduced APC amounts will be listed in ScholarOne.

The University of California Open Access Agreement:

The University of California (UC)/Canadian Science Publishing Open Access Agreement enables UC corresponding authors to publish open access by default in all of CSP’s journals. The UC libraries automatically pay the first $1000 of the open access publishing fee for all UC-affiliated corresponding authors. Authors are asked to pay the remainder of the fee from research funds, or, if such funds are not available, the UC libraries will pay the remainder. If the APC is less than $1000 USD, UC will pay the full APC amount but authors will still be asked to complete the University of California Open Access Payment form.

Publication cost sponsorships:

We are actively investigating methods of sponsorship and external funding that would provide support for authors who may not be able to cover the cost of an APC in part or in full. If you or your organization is interested in sponsoring publication costs for a group of authors (either by institution, field of study, or geography), please contact Celia Charron

Payment

Canadian Science Publishing has partnered with SciPrisSciPris is an online payment platform that allows you to pay and manage fees associated with the publication of your article, including Open Access Article Processing Charges (APCs) and/or Page Charges. If publication fees apply to your article, the corresponding author will receive an email with payment instructions. Payment can be made online by credit card or by requesting an invoice.

Payment must be received in full before production can begin, and can be made by credit card, cheque, or wire transfer.

Payment must be made in full by one author (or their sponsor). Multiple sources of payment will not be accepted.

Refunds

The publisher, Canadian Science Publishing, may at their discretion refund an APC or offer credit towards a future publication.
