Social Dimensions of Rural African Agriculture, Food, and Development

This Collection addresses what smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan African countries are doing to increase their food security with available resources. Agricultural scientists use the yield gap (the difference between the potential yield of a particular area and the actual yield) to guide efforts to enhance smallholder wellbeing in developing nations. The Collection’s goal is to introduce the social institutional dimension to the yield-gap perspective by illustrating how gender, cultural norms, and other formal and informal institutions are influencing smallholder production, livelihood strategies, and contributions to and access to social wellbeing.
