At Canadian Science Publishing we’re dedicated to serving the needs of researchers and their communities. The 2014 Canadian Science Publishing survey of Canadian science researchers revealed that 25% of the research produced in Canada in the previous two years was published in open access or hybrid journals, and that 40% of the researchers were publishing more often in open access journals than in the past. At the funding level, NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC are now requiring Canadian researchers receiving grants to make their research outputs open access through either green or gold routes, matching what’s happening with other funding agencies around the world. Until the development of FACETS, there was no Canadian open access multidisciplinary journal option, a void that FACETS has since filled.
All authors publishing in FACETS keep their copyright. We do not require that authors transfer their copyright and authors are free to reuse their material without seeking permission.
Material published in FACETS is governed by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). This conforms to the licensing requirements of all major funding agencies. For authors, a liberal user license allows for the widespread accessibility and use of your content. For end users, the CC BY 4.0 license means that users are not required to obtain permission from the author or publisher to reuse content published in FACETS as long as the original article is cited.

What is the scope of FACETS?
FACETS is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary science journal. To start we are focusing on seven research areas. Additional subject categories will be added as the journal evolves in conjunction with emerging scientific advances.
Although not officially covering Social Sciences and Humanities topics, the Integrative Sciences section will include intersections of science and the social sciences with topics such as science and policy and science communication.
Although FACETS primarily features research articles, we also publish review articles, communications, notes, perspectives, editorials, science applications forum papers, and retrospectives.
Yes, FACETS is peer reviewed. We believe that peer review is an essential component of open access publishing. Submissions to FACETS will undergo the same rigorous single-blind peer review process as Canadian Science Publishing’s journals. The FACETS peer review policy is both rigorous and objective, assessing the technical validity or soundness of the work. To be accepted, authors must also show evidence of advancing knowledge. We prioritize soundness of science as a way of making space for the publication of negative results and replication studies that advance the current state of knowledge.

Prospective authors will be asked to include a statement of how their work advances knowledge in the cover letter section of their submission. While papers included in the Integrative Sciences section may not necessarily follow the traditional model of results and findings, the research in this section makes essential contributions to the way we think about and understand science in our daily lives. Accepted papers may show evidence of advancing knowledge by demonstrating a gap in our current understanding that has been filled, providing a new or different perspective on a topic, making a novel connection between science and society, or by reviewing and replicating previous research.
FACETS is indexed on the American Mathematical Society, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), OCLC, ReadCube, Science Citation Index Expanded, Scopus, and WorldCat.
FACETS encourages authors to make data used in their articles available in a publicly accessible database at the time of publication. For information about subject-specific repositories, please refer to the Instructions to Authors.
FACETS recognizes the need to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of all content published in FACETS. For that reason, all articles published in FACETS are archived in Portico and CLOCKSS. This means that no matter what happens to FACETS in the future, all published research will remain accessible, now and in the future.
FACETS will consider requests to waive article processing charges on a case-by-case basis. Before requesting a waiver, please ensure that all possible funding sources have been considered (e.g., your funder and (or) your institution may cover article processing charges).
